Getting to Amersfoort from Utrecht is straightforward. The train from Utrecht Centraal to Amersfoort Centraal takes just 15 minutes, with frequent departures throughout the day. To buy a ticket, simply tap your contactless card at the barriers at the station, and you're good to go.

Once you arrive in Amersfoort, it's about a 15-minute walk from the station to the historic centre. Turn left as you leave the station and follow these signs on the pavement to the old town. From there, you can explore the city at your own pace, taking in its charming streets, historic buildings, and picturesque canals.

Morning is a great time to explore Amersfoort's historic centre. Start your visit at Koppelpoort, Amersfoort's fancy medieval gate that once protected the city. It's a combination land and water gate and is one of the best-preserved gates in the Netherlands. You might even see it open for passing boats.

Wander the quaint streets of Amersfoort to discover its hidden gems. The old town has narrow, cobbled streets, historic gabled houses, markets, and picturesque canals. Some of the prettiest streets include Muurhuizen, a circular street built along the original medieval city walls, and Langestraat, the main shopping street.

I had a lovely light lunch at Amersfoorts DIEP on Nieuweweg 5 in the old town. The café offered a range of delicious options, from traditional Dutch dishes to international cuisine. It was the perfect spot to enjoy a meal while taking in the beautiful views of the canal.

Alternatively, take a stroll along the water or consider a boat tour to see Amersfoort from a different perspective. However, be sure to check the weather forecast before embarking on any outdoor activity. In my visit, the weather was too chilly for a boat tour, but it was still possible to enjoy the city's scenic canal system.

Amersfoort is also worth visiting because of its connection to famous abstract artist Piet Mondrian. The city is the birthplace of this renowned artist, and his childhood home is now a museum dedicated to his work. Even if you're not an art enthusiast, it's still a fascinating insight into his life and creative process.

Before taking the train back to Utrecht, have one last stroll around the city. In the evening, Amersfoort's historic buildings are beautifully illuminated, making for a magical atmosphere. It's the perfect way to cap off a day in this charming Dutch town.
