Utrecht, one of the Netherlands' most picturesque cities, is a must-visit destination for anyone looking to experience the perfect blend of history, culture, and relaxation. With its scenic canals, medieval landmarks, and tranquil atmosphere, Utrecht is an excellent choice for a short getaway, whether you're a history buff, an architecture enthusiast, or simply someone who loves to explore beautiful cities at a leisurely pace. As I recently discovered during my week-long house-sitting adventure in the city, there's plenty to see and do in Utrecht that will leave you wanting more. One of the best ways to experience the city is by taking a 30-minute train ride from Amsterdam. This makes Utrecht an ideal alternative for those who want to escape the hustle and bustle of the capital without sacrificing too much convenience. With its easy public transport system, getting around Utrecht is simple – just tap your card to pay – but it's also a very walkable city, so you may not need it much. My first day in Utrecht was filled with history, culture, and exploration. I started the morning by climbing or admiring the Dom Tower, the tallest church tower in the Netherlands. If you're feeling adventurous, climb the 465 steps to the top for incredible city views. However, if you're not up for it, don't worry – there's plenty to see from the ground level as well. The Dom Tower is a must-visit attraction in Utrecht, and I recommend visiting it either by taking the stairs or by admiring its grandeur from below. For those who prefer to explore beneath their feet rather than above, Dom Under is a fascinating way to learn about Utrecht's 2,000-year history. By walking beneath Dom Square, you'll discover Roman ruins, medieval artefacts, and the city's turbulent past. This underground experience is a great alternative to climbing the tower and offers a unique perspective on the city's rich history. Next, I wandered through Pandhof Domkerk, a hidden cloister garden that's a peaceful oasis in the heart of the city. There's also a lovely café nearby where you can stop for coffee or a snack before continuing your walk. The combination of natural beauty and tranquility makes this spot an ideal place to relax and unwind. After exploring the Dom Tower complex, I strolled along Oudegracht, Utrecht's most famous street lined with medieval wharf cellars that now house cafés, boutiques, and bookshops. This charming street is just a delight to explore, with plenty of nooks and crannies to discover and hidden gems to stumble upon. Utrecht's oldest shopping street, Twijnstraat, is another must-visit destination for anyone looking for unique souvenirs or simply wants to browse the local boutiques. This street connects seamlessly with Oudegracht, so you'll likely encounter it at some point during your wanderings. With its independent shops and unique atmosphere, Twijnstraat is a shopper's paradise. In the afternoon, I visited Museum Speelklok, a quirky museum that's packed with self-playing musical instruments from giant street organs to tiny music boxes. If you enjoy unusual collections or are simply looking for something new and different, this museum is definitely worth a visit. For families or young children, Utrecht offers plenty of interactive experiences, including the Miffy Museum. As the birthplace of Miffy (Nijntje), the beloved children's book character, this museum is a must-visit for anyone who loves these iconic characters. You can also spot Miffy statues around town and check out the Miffy traffic lights near Mariaplaats. In the evening, I followed the Trajectum Lumen Light Trail, an artistic light installation that illuminates Utrecht's landmarks with vibrant colors and patterns. Although I didn't find it underwhelming as recommended to me, I did appreciate its unique atmosphere and the opportunity to experience the city in a new way. On my second day in Utrecht, I visited De Haar Castle, the Netherlands' most luxurious castle surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens. With its fairytale towers and lavish interiors, it's definitely worth a visit – especially if you're interested in architecture or just love castles. The journey to the castle is around an hour by public transport, but it's well worth the trip. Finally, I spent some time exploring Utrecht's hidden streets and discovering secret courtyards like Janskerkhof and Drift. These historic areas are filled with beautiful buildings and narrow alleys that offer a glimpse into the city's rich history and culture. Wandering along the canals is also a great way to experience the city, but be sure to watch out for cyclists! As I prepared to leave Utrecht, I couldn't help but think about all the amazing experiences I had during my stay. From climbing church towers to exploring hidden streets, there's something for everyone in this beautiful Dutch city. Whether you're a history buff, an architecture enthusiast, or simply someone who loves to explore new places, Utrecht is a must-visit destination that will leave you with unforgettable memories. So why not consider adding Utrecht to your travel list? With its unique blend of history, culture, and relaxation, this charming city has something for everyone. And with its easy public transport system and walkable streets, getting around Utrecht is simple – just tap your card to pay! As I always say, there's no better way to experience a new city than by exploring its hidden gems and secret courtyards.
