The JW Marriott Maldives Resort & Spa has been a solid contender among luxury properties in the archipelago since its opening in 2019. To determine if it remains on top of their game, we decided to put it to the test after visiting Le Méridien Maldives. Although this is not the new JW Marriott Maldives Kaafu Atoll Island Resort, which equally looks impressive and still needs to be added to our 'to do' list, we felt that being a family-friendly resort was the perfect reason to test it out. As we stepped off the seaplane onto the island, it felt like stepping into a James Bond movie, with everyone on the island seeming to know about our arrival. The welcome from the JW Marriott Maldives Resort & Spa staff was truly exceptional. A small army of employees had clearly unlocked the secret to happiness at work, as you couldn't wipe the smile off their faces even if you tried. The moment we arrived, it felt like we were in for an unforgettable experience. We stayed in a duplex beach pool villa, which may sound like a mouthful, but so is the villa itself. With tons of space, 2 bedrooms, and an upper level that can double as an extra bedroom if needed, there was no shortage of room to relax and unwind. From the moment we walked into the villa, it was clear that practicality had been a top priority in its design. One of the first things you notice about the villa is the massive dressing area, perfect for storing all your luggage. The high ceilings add to the sense of spaciousness, while the 3 bathrooms (a must-have for any family of 4) are always plentifully supplied. There are plenty of windows to take in the lush gardens and pool surrounding the villa, as well as a big garden with multiple seating arrangements to find your perfect spot in the sun. The direct beach access is ideal, but it's equally fun just to hang around your own private pool and chill out in the privacy of your own garden. The latter was a particular highlight, allowing us to relax without any distractions. Whether you prefer to soak up the sun or indulge in some much-needed me-time, this villa has everything you need. The bathrooms are designed to be bathing in natural light, with all the little toiletries you might think of conveniently presented in eco-friendly packaging. It's a small touch, but it makes a big difference when it comes to feeling pampered and relaxed. And with bathrobes for everyone, slippers for inside, and slippers for outside, there's no need to worry about anything. So what does a middle-aged couple do when they get some kids-free time on a tropical island? First stop is the spa! Spa by JW is ideal for couples, featuring 6 couple’s treatment rooms and even a whole deluxe treatment suite. We opted for the latter, and it was undoubtedly the most impressive treatment suite we've ever seen in the Maldives. The experience at Spa by JW was nothing short of exceptional. The plunge pool, glorious views outside, experience showers, relaxation area, and perfectly executed massage all combined to create an unforgettable experience. It's clear that the staff have been trained to provide top-notch service, making every guest feel like royalty. Next stop was the wine room! JW Marriott Maldives truly has an impressive wine collection with over 300 labels, a feat in a remote location where such things are often overlooked. We even found wines from our home country – yes, we got married there! – so it was only natural that we picked one of those. Drinks are great, but what about the food options? I'm happy to report that none of us even remotely remembered what it was like to feel hungry when we left the resort. The food is consistently of very high quality, with 5 different restaurants offering a range of international cuisine from Italian and Thai to Japanese. Our favorite was Hashi, the Japanese restaurant, which transported us straight back to Tokyo's streets. And Kaashi, the Thai restaurant, was another highlight, thanks to its outdoor kitchen reminiscent of Bangkok's famous open kitchens and its unique location on stilts between trees – it felt like dining in a true jungle restaurant. But the newest addition to the resort is definitely worth trying: Riha. Imagine an 8-course culinary journey through India, set within a sunken dining area on the beach where you can experience the island's rich trading history. It was truly a unique and unforgettable experience – and one that requires reservations in advance, as seating is very limited. And did we mention the floating breakfast? It looked more like a floating marketplace due to the sheer amount of food presented – it didn't even fit on our device! The whole outdoor area ended up covered in delicious treats. What can I say? We're hopeless when it comes to trying to leave at least a few calories behind. So how do you make time for fitness and wellness on this tropical paradise? The gym has stunning views over the lagoon, while we spotted an abundance of marine life swimming right underneath it – perfect for spotting some local wildlife. And for those who prefer yoga or Pilates, there's a nearby deck with glorious views of the sunrise. For the more adventurous, there's even a soccer field behind the kids' club where you can show off your skills to friends or bribe the teens into joining in – either way is sure to bring some laughter and fun. And of course, all possible water-sports are available if you're tired of playing on land. But perhaps the best part about this resort? The people. It's an experience I'll always treasure, from a traditional Malaafaiy beach dinner where a dozen staff members came to sing and make music under the stars to simply enjoying the warm hospitality of every single member of the team – it's truly unforgettable. So what does it cost to stay at this luxury resort in the Maldives? Surprisingly, prices start from around $470 per night for a 1-bedroom beach pool villa. Of course, taxes, fees, and transfers add up, but for that price, you get an excellent product in one of the world's most high-end destinations. Our 2-bedroom duplex beach pool villa starts at around $700 per night without extras – but as a Marriott Bonvoy property, we were able to book it from just 79,000 points. That's a steal if you ask me! The final verdict? The original JW Marriott Maldives Resort & Spa is still shining bright with tons of activities, spacious and well-appointed villas, and an impressive culinary scene that will delight families and couples alike. It may have some new competition from its sister resort, but this one remains a top contender.
