Matera, a UNESCO World Heritage site located in southern Italy, is renowned for its ancient cave dwellings, stunning architecture, and breathtaking landscapes. While Matera is technically situated in Basilicata, it's so close to Puglia that it should be included in any trip to the region. During my two-week stay in Puglia, Matera was undoubtedly a highlight. The city has an enchanting quality to it, with its incredible Sassi districts of cave dwellings carved directly into the rock. Exploring the maze of stone alleys and cliffside houses is surreal, and the history here spans thousands of years. It's no wonder that Matera is a UNESCO World Heritage site, having served as the backdrop for movies such as The Passion of the Christ and the James Bond film No Time To Die. While it's possible to visit Matera in a day from Bari, it's much more enjoyable to spend at least a few days there. Here's a suggested two-day itinerary to help you make the most of your visit.
