My 72-hour stay at this beautiful resort was booked from Thursday through Sunday, and I couldn't wait to indulge in its many amenities.
Unfortunately, my flight was initially scheduled for Thursday morning, but it was canceled due to storms and rescheduled for Friday. Thankfully, I managed to secure the last seat on Southwest Airlines, which arrived at the property five hours later than originally planned – just an hour before I'd need to Uber to our group dinner. Despite the initial delay, my prayer was answered, and I was able to fall in love with Henderson Beach Resort.
As I settled into my room, I couldn't help but feel a sense of déjà vu. The resort's private beach, adult and family pools, hot tub, lazy river, vintage photography, and suite overlooking Henderson State Park and the Emerald Coast all seemed to be calling my name. The staff members, including Crystal Wisdom in the video at the rooftop bar and Gabby Armijos at Henderson Inn, gave a warm welcome that made me feel right at home.
However, as I spent more time at the resort, I was reminded that even the most idyllic destinations can be affected by Mother Nature. On Friday, there was a tornado and flash flood watch in effect, which put a damper on my initial plans. The Lionfish Festival scheduled for Saturday was also rained out, but that didn't stop me from making the most of my stay.
Despite the weather woes, I had an amazing time with Captain Josh and Anna Calhoun of Destin Inshore Guides; the Destin-Ft. Walton team and other guests at Harbor Tavern and AJs; Heather and Chris Thomas, owners of The Edge Restaurant and SkyBar; and artist Harley Van Hyning – all of whom I'll share my experiences with in a future post.
But it was on Sunday morning that I truly fell in love with Henderson Beach Resort. As I walked onto the beach, I felt a sense of serenity wash over me, and I couldn't help but remember the phrase "Dolce far Niente" – the sweetness of doing nothing. The welcome gifts, including California wine, the chef's chocolate truffles, and San Pellegrino, were waiting for me in my room, and I spent the morning lounging on the wraparound porch at Henderson Park Inn just steps from the water.
As I reflected on my stay at Henderson Beach Resort, I realized that it was the sum of all its favorite things. The New England-style seaside elegance, the safe community with onsite events, a fitness center, a spa, great restaurants, two bars with live music, and bikes included with the resort fee – everything about this resort made me feel right at home.
Breakfast at Henderson Beach Resort was served in the Primrose dining room or could be ordered through room service, all while enjoying the stunning views of the Gulf. The adult-only pool was a great spot to relax and unwind, and the massage by Kirstin at The Henderson Spa was truly divine – I even fell asleep during the treatment!
As I explored the area, I discovered that 200-acre Henderson State Park separates the resort from high-season crowds, offering a peaceful retreat for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life. And when I did venture out, my favorite spot was the sister property, Henderson Park Inn – a beautiful place to journal and watch waves over breakfast.
