Natural Beauty, Adventure, Happy and Healthy People Await Travel + Leisure named Costa Rica the 2024 Destination of the Year and it's already topping lists for 2025. In a podcast interview (audio version available), Andres Salgado, who grew up in Costa Rica, and his wife, Emily, share why their beloved country took the top spot.

Costa Rica is one of five Blue Zone countries in the world, where people live happier, healthier, and longer. The Nicoya peninsula, on Costa Rica's Pacific coast, stands out for its exceptionally high life expectancy – residents are twice as likely to live to age 90 as Americans. This area has the lowest middle-age mortality rate in the world, making it a fascinating destination for those seeking a healthy lifestyle.

Healthcare costs in Costa Rica are minimal compared to medical care in the U.S., which is one of the main reasons why people choose to live and visit this country. The "Plan de Vida" (Way of Life) initiative has been instrumental in promoting wellness and healthy living practices among locals.

Costa Rica offers a unique blend of natural beauty, adventure, and cultural experiences that cater to all ages and seasons of life. From hiking and zip-lining to exploring vibrant cities and relaxing on stunning beaches, there's something for everyone in this incredible country.

As Andres Salgado notes, "Costa Rica is special to me because I grew up here and it taught me resilience." His love for the country began during a solo trip he took to Puerto Viejo in 2013. The experience not only slowed him down but also opened his eyes to the beauty of Costa Rica.

For Emily, Costa Rica was her gateway to moving abroad in 2014. Her first solo adventure in 2013 laid the foundation for a life-changing experience that would take her and Andres on incredible journeys across the globe.

In their podcast interview, Andres and Emily share their favorite destinations in Europe, Africa, Asia, and the U.S., as well as their engagement story from Switzerland. They also discuss the importance of experiencing different cultures and ways of living to enrich our own lives.

As an educator, I've had the privilege of exploring various countries through EF European tours, but Costa Rica stands out for its unique blend of natural beauty, adventure, and cultural experiences. The country's rich history, stunning landscapes, and welcoming people make it a must-visit destination for anyone looking to escape the ordinary.

For those planning a trip to Costa Rica, Booking.com is an excellent resource. With free cancellation options and flexible payment plans, it makes it easy to wait and pay at the property. Andres and Emily recommend several top-rated hotels and accommodations in Costa Rica, from national parks to luxury resorts.

National Parks protect Costa Rica's incredible wildlife and natural resources. These protected areas offer a glimpse into the country's rich biodiversity, with opportunities for hiking, birdwatching, and exploring unique ecosystems.

Costa Rica is an excellent destination for travelers of all ages and backgrounds. Whether you're looking for adventure, relaxation, or cultural immersion, Costa Rica has something to offer. From weddings in paradise to guided tours for educators and students, there's a wealth of options available to suit every interest and preference.
