Getting to Amersfoort from Utrecht is straightforward. The train from Utrecht Centraal to Amersfoort Centraal takes just 15 minutes, with frequent departures throughout the day. To buy a ticket, simply tap your contactless card at the barriers at the station, and you're good to go.
Once you arrive in Amersfoort, it's about a 15-minute walk from the station to the historic centre. Turn left as you leave the station and follow these signs on the pavement to the old town. From there, you can explore the city at your own pace, taking in its charming streets, historic buildings, and picturesque canals.
Morning is a great time to explore Amersfoort's historic centre. Start your visit at Koppelpoort, Amersfoort's fancy medieval gate that once protected the city. It's a combination land and water gate and is one of the best-preserved gates in the Netherlands. You might even see it open for passing boats.
Wander the quaint streets of Amersfoort to discover its hidden gems. The old town has narrow, cobbled streets, historic gabled houses, markets, and picturesque canals. However, be sure to check the weather forecast before embarking on any outdoor activity. In my visit, the weather was too chilly for a boat tour, but it was still possible to enjoy the city's scenic canal system.
